Basement, Jun 2017

One of our largest projects to date, a full remodel of a 1500 square foot basement! Amenities include a large bedroom, fitness area, three piece bathroom, bar with bar side seating and separate seating area with fireplace and TV, space for future pool table, and a home theatre outfitted with a 100" screen, 4k projector, and 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos sound system!

We started with a small amount of demolition to remove one of the doors that entered into the basement area from the stairs. This allowed us to create a small storage/AV room for the home theatre equipment. We then framed the entire basement, and added insulation, vapour barrier and drywall before painting. Premium laminate was used throughout except for the stairs and bedroom, which received new carpet, all trimmed with 5&1/4" premium baseboards. Over 50 LED lights were installed to illuminate the basement, all controlled by dimmer switches.

The bathroom consists of a 36" vanity, toilet and large 3' x 5' custom shower. We always use Schluter waterproof products when creating our custom bathrooms and showers to ensure no water leaks for the home owner in the future. The entire shower was tiled with large porcelain tile, accented with a wide vertical band of stone and glass mosaic tile, and encased in frameless glass.

The bar section of the basement is made up of two components, the actual bar and a seating area. The bar itself is ~30 linear feet of custom made cabinetry, glass tile backsplash and a quartz counter. It includes space for wine bottles, two shelves for liquor bottles, a small bar fridge, sink, and under cabinet lighting. The bar also has space for a number of stools as we installed a raised section of counter to standard bar height of 42". The flooring was finished with large porcelain tile. The seating area of the bar includes an electric wall mounted fireplace, in ceiling speakers and a wall mounted TV. The TV and speakers are connected to the main AV equipment that runs the home theatre which allows for the TV and speakers to display either its own source input or mirror that of the projector. Since the distance from the AV room is too far for HDMI, a Cat6 cable connects the TV to the AV receiver via a Cat6 HDMI extender.

The home theatre includes a 100" 4K Reference Studio 1.0 gain screen with a 3.5" velour border matched to a ceiling mounted Epson Home Cinema 4K 3D capable projector. Two 25 foot 4K HDMI cables, Cat6 and RG6 cables run from the projector back to the AV room for connectivity. We also installed a conduit from the projector to the AV room for future wire pulls. A Yamaha Aventage receiver powers 11 speakers and two subwoofers in both the home theatre space and bar space as a second zone. Over 500 feet of premium 12 gauge speaker wire connect all of the speakers back to the AV room. PSB X1T tower and center speakers were selected for the front speakers, along with PSB subwoofers. Polk Audio MC85 in wall speakers were used for the rear speakers, and Polk Audio MC80 were used for the two bar in ceiling speakers, and four in ceiling Dolby Atmos speakers. A Logitech Harmony remote allows for RF control of the projector, receiver, XBox One and any other additional hardware that will be added to the AV room. All of the walls and ceiling were insulated with Roxul safe and sound insulation to help with sound isolation and deadening. Since the theatre area was also home to the electrical panel, we built a full sized door as close as possible in front to hide it but allow for easy access. A bookshelf was also built into the wall across from the door.

All in all this was a great build covering all of our areas of expertise in a single project!
