Basement, Sep 2017

One of our largest basements to date, this project includes top quality finishes and amenities including a fitness room, three piece bathroom with rainfall shower, custom bar area, billiards room, and a home theatre with 65" TV and 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos sound system!

Starting with nearly a blank slate, we worked with the clients to add all of the various spaces they desired to the design. They were looking for an open concept area focused on entertaining, but also capable of being warm, cozy and inviting for when they want to watch movies as a family. The layout of the basement allowed for the bar area, space for a billiard table, and home theatre to be grouped together. The bathroom and fitness room were kept together, and a large amount of storage space was built into the design.

We framed the entire basement, installed insulation, vapour barrier, drywall and painted. The ceiling throughout the basement was given a sound proofing treatment of Roxul Safe and Sound insulation along with resilient channeling and 5/8" drywall to not only reduce sound from traveling to the upper floors but also to minimize vibrations from foot steps from the upper floor. Premium laminate was used throughout, and was trimmed with premium oversized mouldings matching the existing trim on the main floor. LED lights were installed throughout as well, all controlled by dimmer switches.

The bathroom consists of a 48" vanity with custom quartz counter, premium toilet and a 3' x 5' custom shower. We used Schluter waterproofing products to ensure no water leaks for the clients in the future. The entire shower was tiled with large porcelain tile, accented with glass and stone mosaic, and encased in marble and frameless glass.

The bar includes ~35' of custom made and painted cabinetry, a quartz counter, wrap around backsplash, 42" bar height seating area and 43" TV and in ceiling stereo speakers connected to the main AV system. It includes space for a bar fridge, wine rack, sink and custom under cabinet lighting.

The billiards table section separates the bar and home theatre space, and accommodates up to a 4' x 8' table. A 55" TV hangs above a nearly 15' custom made floating shelf adorned with the same quartz as the bar counter, which is designed to hold drinks while you play pool.

The home theatre is the main focal point of the basement which contains the 7 & 1/2' wide fireplace made of stone. The fireplace itself includes the latest technology which doesn't require a pilot light and also includes multi colored LED lights for ambiance. Above the fireplace is a 65" TV mounted on a fully articulating wall mount. To the right of the fireplace is the central AV connection point. 4K HDMI, RG6 and Cat6 cables run from this point to all four of the TVs located in the basement. This allows for simultaneous distribution of audio and video to all of these points. Cat6 cables running from a gigabit switch located at the electrical panel bring network and internet connectivity to all of the devices located in the home theatre. A Panamax power cleaning and distribution unit pushes 120V power out to the TVs and subwoofer to ensure they are always fully protected. The heart of the AV setup is the latest version of Denon's top end receiver. It delivers 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos and a 2nd stereo zone to 11 8" Monitor Audio in-ceiling and in-wall speakers via premium 12 gauge audio cables. A 15" Klipsch subwoofer dominates the left side of the fireplace and provides all of the bass needed for this home theatre.

This was a fantastic project to work on and a pleasure to work with this client!
